BOC Rate Decision in Focus | US-China Trade Talks Wrap Up

  • The Bank of Canada will announce its latest rate decision today. The BoC is expected to keep its benchmark rate at 1.75 percent and will also release its quarterly economic forecasts, followed by a press conference from Governor Stephen Poloz.
  • Three days of trade negotiations between mid-level American and Chinese officials wrapped up in Beijing on Wednesday in an optimistic atmosphere after President Donald Trump said they were going very well. A Chinese foreign ministry spokesman, Lu Kang, announced the talks had ended and an official statement would be issued later.
  • US President Donald Trump’s Oval Office address Tuesday night cast the southern border as in crisis and blamed Democrats for failing to provide money for his border wall and partially closing the government. He suggested that building a wall between the US and Mexico would be an act of “love” because walls protect the people inside them.
  • The World Bank issued their semi-annual Global Economic Prospects report to warn of a slowing global economy. Titled “Storm Clouds are Brewing for the Global Economy,” the report highlighted some of the growth risks that various nations face in the year ahead.
