Published August 17, 2018
  • Brexit talks resumed in Brussels between UK and EU officials amid growing speculation about the possibility of the UK leaving the European Union without a deal in March 2019. This comes as the EU’s chief negotiator, Michel Barnier, has appeared to rule out a key UK proposal which permitted the UK to collect EU customs duties.
  • Statistics Canada will release its monthly CPI report at 8:30am EST. Canadian inflation will have likely edged up 0.1% in July, bringing annual CPI to 2.5%. Canada’s core inflation rate is forecast to dip 0.1% monthly and rise 1.3% annually.
  • Treasury Secretary Mnuchin warned that Turkey will face more sanctions if American pastor, Andrew Brunson, is not released. The lira added to gains yesterday after Turkish Finance Minister Albayrak assured that there would be no imposition of capital controls in response to the crisis.
  • Eurostat published the final readings of euro-zone inflation figures early this morning, with the headline CPI coming in at a 2.1% rise in July, matching the flash estimate. The core figures (excluding food, energy, alcohol, and tobacco) also matched the original estimate of 1.1% increase in prices.
